Cupping Therapy in Dubai | All You Need to Know

/ Lifestyle

Also known as hijama, cupping therapy is an ancient practice that originated in China and is now performed around the world. Dubai is known for its diverse culture and traditions and this therapy is done by many specialists for residing Muslims and tourists alike. It is known to treat a wide range of diseases such as acne, fertility, facial paralysis, migraines, depression, anxiety, skin allergies, varicose veins, and arthritis. Sometimes the specialist performs cupping with an acupuncture treatment.

The general benefits of cupping therapy include body detoxification, skin nourishment, pain-relieving, and improved blood circulation.

What are the different types of cupping therapy?

Cupping can be performed in various ways the two main ones being; dry cupping and wet cupping. In dry cupping, cups are placed over the body which creates suction and pulls the skin upwards. This causes muscle tension and ultimately decreases pain. The vacuum impact that the skin goes through allows the natural process of healing to happen. The soft tissue is stretched which makes the body’s motion relatively better. In the latter form of therapy, a small cut is made to the skin and a cup is placed on that area. Moving cupping and fixed cupping are other sub-types of cupping.

How does cupping therapy work?

When a hot cup is placed on your skin, the skin moves upward due to the vacuum created and you may experience slight discomfort, followed by redness of the skin. The total procedure takes about 6-10 minutes. After that, the cups are removed and the impacted area is covered with bandages or medicated cream to reduce the chances of infection. After a week or so, the bruises heal by themselves.

How often can I get it done?

The time is dependent on various factors: what are you getting it done for in the first place, how much time it takes you to heal from the first procedure if the desired outcome requires more treatments and what your cupping therapist suggests. However, people have even reported having it done twice a week safely.

What are the side-effects of cupping therapy?

It is advised to not have a heavy meal prior to your treatment. During the process, you can feel dizzy and nauseated but it’s not the case for everyone. You also have to make sure that the person treating you is certified, and is using sterilized equipment to prevent diseases such as hepatitis. The wound heals in some days and if cared for, the chances of infection are low. If you have any specific skin conditions, consult a dermatologist before getting the treatment done as it may result in scarring and bruising.
